Inter Milan coach Claudio Ranieri insists history will be the last thing on his mind when he takes on his former club Juventus tomorrow at the San Siro.

Ranieri guided Juventus for two seasons before being sacked in May 2009.

He then had successful spells with Parma and Roma.

"It's going to be a normal game like any other,'' Ranieri said in today's press conference. "The game against Juventus is worth three important points but nothing else.

"Just because it's my former club does mean this encounter changes something from an emotional standpoint.''

Last season's runners-up, Inter have struggled in attack and defence this term and head into the contest with just two wins in eight games.

Inter were held to a 1-1 draw at Atalanta on Wednesday and are 16th in the standings, two points above the relegation zone.

"We will play this game without thinking about the standings,'' Ranieri said. "I am convinced that, late in the season, we will be high up in the table and fighting for the scudetto, regardless of tomorrow's results.''

In contrast, Juve are the only unbeaten side in the league and have an eight-point advantage over Inter.

Juve, coached by Antonio Conte, beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Tuesday to take over sole leadership of Serie A.

"Conte is doing a great job,'' Ranieri said.

"Juve want to return to be a top club and, because they don't play in Europe, they are able to focus all of their attention on the league.

"We are a big club but we have endured a difficult start and now we must get results in order to recover.''

Inter, who host Lille on Wednesday in the Champions League, are without goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

The Brazilian sustained a muscular injury in midweek and Luca Castellazzi will take his place in goal.

Argentina striker Diego Milito will drop to the bench with Giampaolo Pazzini and Mauro Zarate set to lead Inter's attack.

Conte looks set to name an unchanged side to the one that beat Fiorentina.

Calciopoli And Beyond: The Contrasting Tales Of Inter And Juventus

Oct 29, 2011

When Inter and Juventus take the pitch this weekend, it will kick off the fiercest rivalry in modern football, for it will reopen the wounds of the crippling scandal in Italian football history, a scandal which will pronounce the rivalry between these two teams for the rest of eternity.

Conte convinced Inter favourites

Oct 29, 2011

Juventus manager Antonio Conte has told his players not to forget Inter's qualities as he looks ahead to Saturday's big game in Serie A.

The Bianconeri are undefeated so far this season and sit at the top of the table, which is in stark contrast to Inter who have floundered in the league to sit 16th heading to the weekend.

But despite Inter's rocky start, Conte insisted his side would not underestimate Claudio Ranieri's men at the San Siro.

"Inter are still favourites for the Scudetto. The first eight games should not change this. We must remember they still have the foundations of the team that dominated in Italy and Europe in the last few years," Conte said.

Conte also said that getting carried away by the aggressive rivalry between the two teams was worthless, echoing Ranieri's claims that the match was worth nothing more than three points.

"It is not 'the game'. There are three points up for grabs. Thinking of anything else would be taking it as if it was a provincial match," he said.

"This game has to be normal, a stage for us to continue our development."

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is in doubt as he continues to struggle with a shoulder injury and Conte revealed he will make a last minute decision regarding the goalkeeper.

"We still have to have our final training session and so I cannot respond on Buffon. After working I will have a clearer idea," he said.

Inter versus Juventus is always a game of the utmost significance but the latest instalment of one of the great rivalries in world football feels even more important than usual.

For the Nerazzurri, it is a game that they dare not lose. After eight rounds of action, they currently languish 16th in the standings, eight points adrift of Juve, the league leaders.

Mourinho calls for the San Siro

to inspire Inter to victory over Juventus

The Real Madrid coach, who worked with the Italian giants between 2008 and 2010

and still holds affection for the club, says Claudio Ranieri's side need sixty thousand behind them.

Oct 29, 2011

Former Inter coach Jose Mourinho believes the fans have a crucial role to play in inspiring their team to victory over Juventus in Saturday evening's clash at San Siro.

The current Real Madrid coach won the Coppa Italia, Serie A and Champions League with the Lombardy club before moving to the Spanish giants in 2010. Since then, he has been an interested observer as his former employers have gone through three managers in failed attempts to replicate his success.

Claudio Ranieri's men go into the game having won just two of their opening eight matches in Serie A, knowing that a victory could reinvigorate their season. The Portuguese supremo has faith that the club's fortunes can turn around, starting with the visit of the 27-time Scudetto winners.

"I trust in the experience of Ranieri, and I also have great confidence in the players," Mourinho told La giornalaccio rosa dello Sport.

"As you well know, I still follow the team with great interest from Spain.

"What I ask for is a favour from San Siro. We need one of those nights where we [inter] played not only with 11 men, but with 60,000 on our side."

The 2010 title winners' fortunes at the start of the season contrast starkly to those of tonight's opponents, who go into the game as Serie A leaders, unbeaten in their opening eight fixtures.

One moment of individual genius

could decide Inter v Juventus - Alberto Fontana

Despite their vastly different starts to the season, a close match is anticipated

between two giants of Italian football at San Siro by the hugely experienced ex-goalkeeper.

Oct 29, 2011

Despite the respective clubs' differing starts to the season, former Inter goalkeeper Alberto Fontana believes there is very little to separate his former employers from Juventus ahead of Saturday evening's San Siro clash.

Fontana argues that how both teams react to the potential absence of their respective first-choice goalkeepers - although Gianluigi Buffon could yet play, having been added to the Juventus squad - may decide the game.

However, he has faith in the ability of both teams' favoured back-ups.

Marco Storari, second choice at the Vinovo club, and the Milanese giants' Luca Castellazzi would be "first choice in many other Serie A teams", he claimed on Tuttomercatoweb.

That Claudio Ranieri's men have started the season so poorly owes to a lack of consistency, he insisted.

"When you continue to change coach, you lose important certainties, and in a league like the Italian, which is the most difficult, you cannot afford to have uncertainty," the 44-year-old continued.

On the other hand, the 27-time Scudetto winners have the form of the "amazing" Andrea Pirlo and Mirko Vucinic to thank for their unbeaten start to the season, according to Fontana.

Nevertheless, the erstwhile former goalkeeper believes both sides will be similarly prepared and organised for Saturday's match.

"On the pitch, the difference is made by the players," he concluded.

Inter have won just twice in their opening eight Serie A matches; a stark contrast to their opponents who remain unbeaten at the top of the table.

Antonio Conte's record as a player for Juventus against Inter

The 42-year-old is set to appear in his first Derby d'Italia as coach but he remains

a veteran of the fixture, having made 23 on-field appearances. Goal.com takes a closer look.

Oct 29, 2011

New Juventus coach Antonio Conte has been showered with praise since taking the hotseat at the club with which he spent 12 successful years as a player. And, perhaps unsurprisingly considering he is steeped in the history and prestige of the Bianconeri, those compliments have focused on the way he has been able to transfer the values from the Juve teams he graced in the past to the current squad.

"The team are doing well and you can already see the good work of Conte," former Juve sporting director Alessio Secco gushed. "Antonio has clear ideas having already played for Juventus, and he knows how to transmit his winning spirit to the players."

Current Italy coach Cesare Prandelli echoed those sentiments, saying: "He has transmitted his desire for revenge and hunger for the championship [to his players]," while his former Old Lady team-mate Angelo Di Livio added to the crescendo earlier this month, "Yes, I admit it: I am reminded of the Juventus I played for by Conte's squad."

If these observations eventually prove to have their basis in fact and Conte manages to repeat the success he had with the club as a player, this may bode well in the short term too, particularly with Saturday evening's Derby d'Italia in mind.

In 13 seasons as a Juventus player, the 42-year-old Lecce native featured in 23 clashes with Inter, emerging victorious on 11 occasions - more than double the number of matches he ended on the losing side.

It is, therefore, fair to say that Conte held the upper hand over Inter as a player. Now he will hope to continue that trend as a coach.

Indeed, one of the most memorable and controversial episodes in Conte's career came in this fixture; at the Stadio delle Alpi on April 26, 1998.

With the home side 1-0 up thanks to an early Alessandro Del Piero goal, Inter launched a series of late attacks and looked certain to be awarded a penalty when Mark Iuliano bundled Ronaldo to the ground inside the box.

Amazingly, referee Piero Ceccarini waved away the penalty appeals before subsequently awarding the hosts a spot-kick after Taribo West

Ranieri's coaching record against his former clubs

going into Inter v Juventus clash

With the Nerazzurri boss set to face the club he was in charge of between 2007 & 2009

on Saturday, Goal.com takes a closer look at his record in matches against his previous sides.

Oct 29, 2011

"Just because Juventus were my former club does not change anything on an emotional level. For me it will be the usual match. It's worth three important points, nothing more."

Those were the calm and measured words of current Inter coach Claudio Ranieri in the build-up to Saturday evening's Derby d'Italia against his former club Juventus. In the passionate world of football, he could be forgiven for getting caught up in the heat of a derby which also offers him the opportunity to gain sweet revenge for his unceremonious sacking by the Turin side with just two matches remaining in the 2008-09 season.

But not Ranieri. The 60-year-old was his typical self, refusing the opportunity to get involved in bitter back-biting or to reveal some deeply-harboured resentment - a trait that was never more evident than when, just five months after he was replaced by Jose Mourinho, he discussed his ignominious exit from English Premier League side Chelsea.

"I am a sensitive man and so I understand why we talk about betrayal even though it is not the word I like. I try to say I am disappointed but not betrayed. I am not bitter," he said in interview with The Guardian.

However, while he may not publicly admit to actively seeking revenge against those who used to employ him, his coaching record against former clubs is impressive enough to suggest that he does send his teams out with a bee in their collective bonnet.

In 24 years as a coach, Ranieri has occupied the technical area for 48 Serie A matches against former sides and has emerged victorious on no fewer than 27 occasions, which equates to a very respectable win percentage of 56.3.

His ability to exact some sort of on-field revenge is further evidenced by the fact he has also drawn 11 of those 48 games, meaning he is undefeated in a whopping 79.1 per cent of fixtures against previous employers in Italy's top flight.

It is, therefore, fair to say that while Antonio Conte may hold a psychological advantage in terms of his success in Derby d'Italia fixtures as a player, the Bianconeri boss will have his work cut out in this upcoming duel against an adversary who has the uncanny knack of pulling a win out of the hat when he goes head-to-head with his former paymasters.

But, in some respects, 'The Tinkerman' may have already satiated any hypothetical desire for revenge against the Old Lady when, seven months after departing Turin, he took his Roma side to the Stadio Olimpico di Torino on January 23, 2010.

On that dramatic night, the Giallorossi looked dead and buried when Alessandro Del Piero fired Juve into a 51st-minute lead. But club talisman Francesco Totti sparked hopes of a comeback with a penalty just after the hour, before John Arne Riise sealed a stunning 2-1 victory when, deep into stoppage time, he popped up in the box to nod home David Pizarro's cross.

And while a repeat of that memorable result is plausible, it might be beyond Ranieri's wildest dreams, considering his side's start to the season and the fact their Derby d'Italia opponents are top of the pile, to hope for a similar scoreline to that achieved in his first ever Serie A clash with a former club on December 8, 1991. That day, his Careca-inspired Napoli side cruised to a 4-0 win over Cagliari to secure what remains his highest-ever margin of victory over a former team.

However unlikely a repeat of that four-goal triumph may be, one thing us undeniable: history is on Ranieri's side.

Matri on the rise as Juventus face Inter in the Derby d'Italia

Oct 29, 2011

Netting the winner in Tuesday's victory over Fiorentina, Juventus striker Alessandro Matri is beginning to find his feet for the season with a string of fine performances. Scoring a commendable four goals in five starts, the Bianconeri forward is making an impression on Juve and calcio fans alike - recently earning comparisons to ex-Juventus star David Trezeguet. His biggest test yet comes against Inter on Saturday in the Derby d'Italia.

Matri was signed on loan from Calgiari in January as a direct replacement for the also-on-loan but injured Fabio Quagliarella. With Quagliarella out for the rest of the season, Matri capitalised on the opportunity and earned a regular spot leading the Juve front-line - scoring a total of nine goals in 16 appearances. Sporting director Beppe Marotta decided to sign both forwards on full-time contracts during the summer transfer window, splashing out a lavish

Pazzini starts for Inter as Buffon returns in goal for Juventus

The Italian No.1 has shrugged off an injury to start in goal for the away side

while Claudio Ranieri names the former Sampdoria upfront alongside Mauro Zarate.

Oct 29, 2011

Claudio Ranieri has made three changes to his side for Saturday's crunch Serie A encounter against rivals Juventus at San Siro.

Julio Cesar picked up a thigh strain in the 1-1 draw versus Atalanta midweek so Luca Castellazzi starts in goal for the 2011 Coppa Italia winners.

Elsewhere, Giampaolo Pazzini comes in for Diego Milito upfront while Joel Obi replaces Dejan Stankovic in the middle of the park.

Juventus have made only one change from the team who beat Fiorentina 2-1 earlier in the week with first-choice goalkeeper, Gianluca Buffon returning between the sticks with Marco Storari resigned to the substitute bench.

The Old Lady are currently top of Serie A and will be looking for all three points against rivals Inter, who are struggling down in 16th place following a dreadful start to the campaign.

Inter (4-3-1-2): Castellazzi; Maicon, Lucio, Chivu, Nagatomo; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Obi; Sneijder; Pazzini, Zarate

Juventus (4-3-2-1): Buffon; Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio; Pepe, Vucinic; Matri
