If we win the last game, then we can go through,” said the goalkeeper. “We could’ve finished more of our chances in the first half, as we had at least two or three great ones, but in a European Championship you’re facing tough opponents. “It was a shame getting this draw, especially as the defence had worked so well. We paid a heavy price for one of the few opportunities Croatia had. “Andrea Barzagli is doing well and recovering quickly, which is another weapon we can count on. “The team’s consistency also depends on the way we face games and play them. Objectively, I feel that this team is playing good football and just needs to be more clinical when the scoring opportunities arise. “When matches are so evenly balanced, we really cannot afford to give anything away. We will do everything we can to make the Italians proud.” Buffon was at Euro 2004 when a 2-2 draw between Denmark and Sweden knocked Italy out in the group phase. An identical situation could play out in Euro 2012 Group C if Spain beat Ireland this evening, as a 2-2 draw with Croatia would send both through. “In this case the two teams are of different quality, in that Spain are absolutely the favourites and strongest of all. “Their players have a pedigree that wouldn’t – in my view – allow them to be considered anti-sporting or become a laughing stock around the world for getting a 2-2.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jun 15, 2012 Italy captain Gigi Buffon is confident Spain won’t be looking for a 2-2 draw against Croatia which could eliminate the Azzurri from Euro 2012. The Italian media is fearing a repeat of Euro 2004 when Giovanni Trapattoni’s side were dumped out of the competition thanks to a 2-2 between Sweden and Denmark. But the Juventus ‘keeper has told his official Facebook page that he believes a victory against the Republic of Ireland, now bossed by Trap, on Monday will be enough. “I’m convinced our destiny is exclusively in our own hands,” he stated after the 1-1 draw with Croatia. “If we win then we’ll go through, so we won’t start to worry unnecessarily about possible outcomes elsewhere. “When you have the awareness of being stronger, you’re not scared of anything. You play to enjoy yourselves and to win, while looking to express your superiority. “As I’ve said before, Spain will be Spain – I’m fully convinced about that.” Italy took the lead against Croatia on Thursday, but they failed to double their advantage and their opponents hit back after the break. “There’s an element of bitterness that will remain,” Buffon added. “At least until the next game – the decisive game!” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

The only ingredients I know to win a game are head, heart, courage and legs. “When needed, I’ll try to add hands... Jun 18, 2012 Gianluigi Buffon thanked Spain for helping Italy qualify and felt it was “a sign” that Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli got the goals. The Azzurri beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0, but that was only enough because Spain defeated Croatia 1-0, as a 1-1 draw would’ve knocked them out. “I’ve been relaxed for the last four days, as our only concern was our match. This is because I was absolutely convinced Spain would win their game and we must thank them,” said Buffon. “I was relaxed, as knowing Spain they would be likely to keep the ball for the final minute. They didn’t? Lucky I didn’t watch it, then! “As I said to the Dutch four years ago, who beat Romania to help us through, we will always keep a fondness for them. I might retire in a few years, but we must remember that. “There were two dangerous shots, as their midfielder hit free kicks very well. The important thing was to win, especially as so far we’ve always made every game balanced, whether against stronger or weaker sides. That can be a good or a bad thing and we needed the cynicism that we found this evening. “Our minimum objective was to go through to the knockouts. We could go out, as there are strong teams left in the competition, but now we’re here we can really go for it.” Cassano and Balotelli finally broke their droughts to score in tonight’s game. “It’s a great sign because we really needed Cassano and Balotelli, who despite good performances had been unable to score. “In the Euros you play every four days and it’s really difficult to recover. In my view, in the long run teams will feel the fatigue. The Coach changed his line-up because he has faith in all 23 players, but he also changed system and these players were more suited to those characteristics.” Buffon also posted some messages on his Facebook page this week criticising the media for focusing on the betting scandal or the potential 2-2 draw between Spain and Croatia. “I accept criticism and nastiness with a smile on my face. I’m glad with the internet we have found a diplomatic way for players to give their own unfiltered position without it being misinterpreted.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jun 18, 2012 Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon has insisted his side were only concentrating on their own game as they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 to advance to quarter-finals of Euro 2012, but thanked Spain for their helping hand anyway. Cesare Prandelli’s side could have been eliminated from the competition if La Roja and Croatia had drawn 2-2, however, a late strike from Jesus Navas ended that possibility as the Spaniards finished top of Group C with their win in Gdansk. The Juventus shotstopper was delighted with his team’s performance against Giovanni Trapattoni’s side and feels it was vital to register their first win in the tournament to send them through to the quarter-finals with confidence. He told Rai Sport: "I had four days of calm. The only concern was our game; I had confidence in Spain. Thanks also to them. Like Netherlands four years ago. "The important thing was to win and we deserved to. We were well balanced for the whole game. Nobody gifted us anything. I made two saves from dangerous shots; both were struck well.” Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli each found the net for the first time in the competition, with the Manchester City striker scoring in spectacular fashion with an overhead volley direct from a corner. And Buffon believes having their front men firing on all cylinders is a good omen for the latter stages of the tournament. He added: "The two strikers scoring? A good sign. They have played two good games without scoring, with the goals it's easier." Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

I hope there will be more occasions, but I above all hope we win this one. “Italy have the ability to make every game balanced so it is then decided by incidents. That can be a positive or a negative, as we do it against stronger or weaker teams. We have a 50 per cent chance of winning. “Both Italy and England are looking for confirmation of form and want to recapture the prestige that has been lost in recent years. “Did we qualify with difficulty? No, we were always totally relaxed. Besides, we’re accustomed to dealing with difficulties. “When we started this journey two years ago, the idea was to make up for South Africa. Our objective was to amaze and make ourselves and our fans proud. We hope to be up to the task.” Joe Hart said he was studying Italy’s penalty takers in case the Euro 2012 quarter-final goes beyond extra time. “I haven’t prepared yet, but tonight I and my teammates will try to study them on video. I’ve no idea how Hart will prepare,” noted Buffon. “Wayne Rooney has charisma and is a leader, dragging the team along with him, while John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole are all players who know how to win. “I like Antonio Cassano’s extravagant way of expressing himself and of dealing with his teammates. He has leadership skills and at times that aspect is underestimated. He is an added value to this squad.” The Azzurri dropped the 3-5-2 system and returned to a 4-2-3-1 for the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland, but it’s unclear what they will do against England. “We have roots and traditions that brought us to lift the World Cup four times. Italy have certain characteristics, but also know how to adapt to their opponents.” Buffon finally added that he will be cheering on Greece against Germany in tonight’s quarter-final. “I always support the underdogs. It’s no coincidence I’ve been a Cameroon fan for years, so you can easily imagine who I’m supporting tonight.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

They haven’t won much recently, partly due to bad luck and often going out on penalties,” Buffon told the UEFA website. “They have three or four world class players like John Terry, Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard. We respect them and it’ll be a tough test. “I expect a very balanced game, especially as Italy always adapt to their opponents. We always do well against the big teams, whereas we never win easily against the smaller ones. I think there is a really minimal difference between the sides.” The English media has focused heavily on the likelihood of this tie going to penalties, while Roy Hodgson’s men practiced spot-kicks in training. “When there is too much talk about penalties, the game tends to be decided before then. Penalties are part of football and there is merit to be given for winning that way. It takes technique and character to convert them, so it’s really not a lottery. “For a goalkeeper perhaps it is the only time when he doesn’t have that much responsibility. Joe Hart, along with Manuel Neuer, Hugo Lloris and our own Salvatore Sirigu, is no longer an emerging talent, but someone who is consistent and can become crucial for his team. He deserves praise.” Buffon has impressed with his full-throated singing of the national anthem before kick-off at Euro 2012. “I sing with my eyes closed because I feel Italian down to the marrow of my bones. The tricolour, the flag and my nation mean a lot to me. “I lost two grandfathers in WWI, so I think singing and thinking of them in those moments is a form of respect.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Of course my thoughts went to those affected by the earthquake, then all our fans who follow us with such passion from home.” Andrea Pirlo took an audacious chipped penalty in the Francesco Totti style. “I didn’t see any of Italy’s penalties, as I never do,” continued Buffon. “I will admit one thing and take some credit! I told Diamanti to spread the penalty wide, as he is so famous for keeping them tight. I told him Hart must’ve seen the tapes and studied him, so he had to change. “We have quality, but also the ability to make every match even, whether against smaller or bigger teams. That can be a strength or a weakness, but today we thoroughly deserved the victory. “We had more physically and in terms of quality, which was clear for all to see. There is a sort of sporting justice that evens things out in the end.” Italy now reach the Euro 2012 semi-finals against tournament favourites Germany. “As I said before this tournament, I’d have been happy to reach the semi-finals, as it is a respectable achievement with teams like Spain, Germany and even Holland who on paper were superior. “We have therefore hit the target I set and must now try to push a little further, because we can do it.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jun 27, 2012 Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon has issued a rallying cry ahead of Thursday's Euro 2012 semi-final showdown with Germany. On the eve of the country's biggest game since the 2006 World Cup final, the Juventus goalkeeper took to Facebook to remind both his team-mates and the nation that nothing is impossible for those who dare to dream. "There comes a time in life when there remains nothing to do other than take your own path and follow your dreams; this is a duty of every single individual," Buffon wrote. "Too often we are addicted to and left numb by the negativity that surrounds us; too often we are resigned to a fate that others want to assign us, and almost always stop dreaming once we reach the age of maturity or upon reaching a certain position and a job that gives us independence but does not stimulate our imagination and our senses. "As a child I dreamed of becoming a footballer; as a young boy I dreamed of becoming the goalkeeper of the national team and Juventus; at around 20 I wanted to win the Scudetto; when I arrived at 25, the Champions League and the World Cup; at 30, to win back the league titles with Juventus and the European Championship. "The majority of these fixed targets I have achieved, even if something is still missing. I never know if I will realise them, but I have the firm conviction that the only way to do it is to want them; live them intensely even when they seem like Utopian dreams. Without dreams one is not living, one is surviving. Without dreams you are not the driving force in your life, but you are only a faded figure who has accepted your existence, without alarms, without surprises, without life. "Coming here to Poland and thinking of playing a semi-final was unthinkable, at least in warm-up, but we believed in ourselves; we really wanted it; we desired it, and every sacrifice was made with a view to achieving our goal! "Now the obstacle seems insurmountable - it probably will be - but now that we have come so far we must dare to go a little further ... towards the DREAM ... towards the JOY ... "Forward, Italy!" The Azzurri face Joachin Low’s outfit with an historical advantage, having never lost in a competitive match to the Germans from seven previous attempts. However, to make that eight tonight, against one the tournament’s top goalscorers, captain Buffon admits it will take something special from his teammates. “We know you want revenge, and that you’re damn strong. A great team,” he told German publication Bild on Thursday. “We cannot afford any mistakes and as always we will need a little luck. “Traditions and statistics are made just to be overturned. Of course, I hope that things remain the same and that we are again happy. “[The 2006 World Cup semi-final win over Germany] was incredibly satisfying. At that time we beat an opponent in a spectacular setting, we were then able to go to Berlin and became world champions. “The game is a classic between to great teams and will belong to the most beautiful memories of my career.” Buffon was asked of his opponent in the Germany goal, Manuel Neuer, and if the youngster had the potential to become one of the game’s greats between the sticks. “I do not know. Everyone has their story. But, he is certainly very strong. The proof is that he is the No 1 for Bayern and for Germany.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jun 28, 2012 Gianluigi Buffon reveals he was livid at the final whistle of a 2-1 win over Germany. “We can’t play with fire after a performance like that.” The Azzurri had dominated the match, but conceded a late penalty and risked throwing away their 2-0 lead. “We are playing for something unique and totally prestigious, so it’s not right with the performance we put in to risk it in the last five minutes and play with fire. “If they had scored with a lucky ricochet for 2-2, we’d end up losing in extra time 9-2. We are playing in the Euros here and cannot take it lightly. “I always evaluate performances and attitudes rather than strictly wins or losses. We are still young, apart from a few old men in the squad, and need to learn. It’s only right for the old men to tell them off and stir up trouble. “We played a great game and could’ve won with a larger result, but there were times when we were even and made the most of incidents. It doesn’t take much to change a match. It went well for us tonight.” Buffon made a sensational save on Sami Khedira and Mario Balotelli scored moments later. “For a goalkeeper like me I think it was a good response, but it’s nothing new. I’m sorry if someone is surprised… There were two or three ricochets that we were lucky with and must be honest to evaluate everything not just the result. “I know there are many people who love me and I try to repay them with performances. I will smile when we’ve won and we haven’t done that yet.” The goalkeeper also revealed how he prepared for the Euro 2012 semi-final against Germany. “I barely slept, but did not study our opponents, I spent an hour and a half watching YouTube clips of the celebrations in the streets in Italy after our victory over England. That gave me goosebumps and I can only imagine what’s happening now.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

But we are still compact and vigil, as nothing has been achieved other than giving dignity and joy back to our country. “At these moments I like to remember the banner that I read as a child, when I used to collect the Supertifo fanzine and guard it jealously... “It was written by Foggia fans and read: ‘It is better to suffer so we can rejoice than kid ourselves and die.’ “This is also the reason behind my burst of anger after the Germany game. “A hug for everyone. Whether it ends the same or not, we just have to wait and see. When you start a certain journey in a tournament at this level, there are evidently many analogies,” said the goalkeeper in his Press conference. Buffon had noted after starting the group with two 1-1 draws against Spain and Croatia that Italy could not win Euro 2012. “I said we wouldn’t win because in my view the way Euro 2012 started saw a team that showed its superiority. The only problem is we are facing them tomorrow! At least we’re starting out from 0-0. “Spain have so many champions, from goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders to strikers, that singling one out as the biggest danger would be a lack of respect to the other players who have been part of this squad for the last glorious six years. “They have dominated the football world in that time and so I compliment them, but it’s right to face Spain in their best condition, so I hope everyone is ready.” “I think it is right for the best and most talented to win. Spain have a greater chance of winning, as after four years they have great confidence, belief and individuals. “Italy have been a surprise, so we hope we can continue surprising to the end.” Buffon conceded the Nazionale has changed its approach to become the most entertaining and openly attacking side at Euro 2012. “Despite the fact we won four World Cups, there comes a time when you need the humility and strength to change. The Coach did very well to give us the right direction, otherwise it would not have been easy.” The pressure on Spain to make history with three major titles in a row, but the shot-stopper doubts that will be damaging. “I think I’d be happy and probably within me would have more belief if I was facing a Final after winning a World Cup and Euros. These are sensations they have already experienced and that can be a slight advantage. “Iker Casillas? I think he is a great goalkeeper and I admire him very much. I’m very happy to be here, as a year ago I plummeted down the standings of best goalkeepers in the world, so I hope to be up to the task now.” Just as in 1982 and 2006, the Azzurri have reached the Final of a major tournament during a scandal back home. “There is something in the Italian mentality. Quite aside from all the chatter, Italians have a sense of responsibility, respect and love for the shirt that goes beyond any limitation. To raise our flag and make people proud of it is key and we tend to create a group that thinks with a single mind-set. That is our strength.” Mario Balotelli appears to have found a sense of responsibility within the Italy camp and Buffon explains why. “Mario played very well, because first of all he is a player who has immense qualities and that is a good start. Secondly, he entered into a group of great champions, both in football and human terms. He also found a Coach like ours who in many ways managed to get the best out of him. “The credit for Balotelli’s success lies with Mario, because he wanted this and fought for it. A little credit goes to the others too. “It’s true, I sing the anthem with emotion and trepidation, because I care. Italy are my country, the nation I was born in and where I lost two great-grandfathers in war, so this is the least I can do to show my recognition.” Buffon was asked whether it was true that a strong Juventus has given Italy a solid foundation to build upon. “It is useful to have a group of players who already work well together and that can make the Coach’s job easier. They needn’t be Juventus players, but Milan, Inter or any other club too.” He was also asked why Italian clubs struggle in the Champions League compared to Premier League sides, yet on an international level the Azzurri always out-perform England. “Having a competitive League does not mean you have competitive players. England have for a few years shown entertaining football at club level, but are also the nation with the most buying power, so they can afford to spend millions on imports. “This is why I think England – but it happens in Italy and Spain too – no longer feel represented by their League. With the globalisation of football, you struggle. I will also say England are not lucky, as they keep going out on penalties, so that really is a fine line between success and failure.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jun 30, 2012 Italy goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has spoken of his admiration for captain Gianluigi Buffon, despite the fact that he is yet to feature at Euro 2012. The Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper has only been capped twice by the Azzurri, but maintained that he has no qualms about playing second-fiddle to the Juventus goalkeeper. Sirigu insists that Buffon remains a key figure - not only for him as a goalkeeper, but for the entire squad as a leader. "His most important quality, before being a great player or a great captain, is that Gianluigi [buffon] is a very down-to-earth man," the 25-year-old told RMC Sport. "It's nice, he is amiable. Both shot-stoppers will captain their national sides in the Euro 2012 final on Sunday, hoping to further add to their numerous honours at club and international level. And, despite the 31-year-old having matched the Italian in the eyes of many observers, Casillas admits he still looks up to the Juventus star. "Buffon has my admiration and maximum respect," he told Onda Madrid. "He is an exceptional goalkeeper and at 34 is still amongst the best. "For goalkeepers that are a little younger than him he has been a reference, he has driven us and we wanted to be like him. We have a good relationship and every time we meet it is a pleasure." The Spaniard also insisted that the Azzurri will be a tough nut to crack in Kiev, after they knocked out Joachim Low's much-vaunted Germany in the semi-finals. "At the end we will return to face the team we opened the tournament against," he added. "The opponent didn't matter to me because Germany, like Italy, appeared very good, each one with their own style of football. "Italy is a dangerous rival that will make it difficult for us." Jun 30, 2012 Former Italy international Gianluca Pagliuca has stated that Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas have been the best goalkeepers in the world for the last 10 years. The experienced duo will go head-to-head on Sunday as Spain face the Azzurri in the final of Euro 2012 in Kiev, and the retired shot-stopper feels it will be a top-quality clash. "They are the two goalkeepers that have dominated the international scene for years," he told Goal.com Italy. "If the Azzurri win, Gigi [buffon] will equal the titles won by Casillas; a World Cup and the European Championship. "Although they have different characteristics, they are undoubtedly the two best goalkeepers of the past 10 years. "Buffon is taller and has a great sense of position, while Casillas is more responsive, but in the end they will undoubtedly be counted among the greatest goalkeepers in the history of football." The 45-year-old went on to state that he feels Spain would have rather faced Germany at the final hurdle and that Cesare Prandelli's men will win the competition. "Spain, despite being the favourites on paper, we should not fear. In my opinion the Spaniards would have preferred to meet Germany in the final, who would have been a much easier opponent," he added. "For me the Azzurri have a good chance of winning. The Furia Roja have a really strong team, but watch out for Italy; the enthusiasm of the team can make a difference. "I see Italy winning; 2-1 to the Azzurri," he predicted. Jun 30, 2012 Gianluigi Buffon has stated that he wants to win Euro 2012 as a reward for Italy fans' loyalty. Cesare Prandelli's men take on Spain in the competition decider on Sunday, and the Azzurri captain is eyeing glory as a way of repaying the supporters for sticking with the side despite controversies in the game in Italy. “We are there, lads... We are there, fans... We are there, people,” the veteran Juventus stopper wrote on his Facebook page. “We are doing it for us, but also for you, who fire me up and take away two hours of every day so I can watch the street celebrations on YouTube. “For you who never abandoned us, for you who would’ve honoured the shirt the same way we are doing it... but also for The Dream. “The Dream that I found at the end of July 2011 when reading ‘The Dolphin’ by Sergio Bambaren. But we are still compact and vigil, as nothing has been achieved other than giving dignity and joy back to our country. “At these moments I like to remember the banner that I read as a child, when I used to collect the Supertifo fanzine and guard it jealously. “It was written by Foggia fans and read: ‘It is better to suffer so we can rejoice than kid ourselves and die.’ “This is also the reason behind my burst of anger after the Germany game. “A hug for everyone. AVANTI ITALIA!!!” he concluded. Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti
Socrates 8435 Joined: 04-Apr-2006 134093 messaggi Inviato June 30, 2012 Buffon: Prandelli has made Balotelli a better player The veteran goalkeeper has hailed the 21-year-old Manchester City striker's recent improvement ahead of the Azzurri's Euro 2012 final showdown with Spain. Jun 30, 2012 Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has declared that team-mate Mario Balotelli has improved as a player under coach Cesare Prandelli. The Manchester City striker turned in an impressive display in Italy's 2-1 victory against Germany in the Euro 2012 semi-finals, scoring two goals to move to the top of the competition's scoring charts. Prior to the tournament, Balotelli's antics on and off the pitch almost saw him left out of the squad, but Buffon is happy that the 21-year-old is finally showing signs of improvement. "Mario has been playing very well because before he had all these great qualities, and that is always a good start," Buffon told reporters at a press conference. "He is also part of a fantastic group of players, and he found a great coach like ours, who has made him a better player. "But obviously the main merit on his improvement is on himself because he has worked hard to reach this level." The Azzurri's opponents in Sunday's final, Spain, could have sealed Italy's exit before the knockout stages had they drawn 2-2 with Croatia in their final Group C match. And Buffon praised La Roja's honesty and quality, adding: "I wanted to pay my respect to Spain because they were honest and did not draw against Croatia to eliminate us. "Spain's best player? They have so many good players that it is very difficult to state my preference for one. "It would be a lack of respect to a collective that has dominated the world's football scene in the last 4-6 years. I respect all of them, cannot just say one." When questioned about Italy's chances, the Juventus goalkeeper acknowledged that Spain are favourites following their recent successes. "I am very happy that Spain are extremely motivated to play a final after winning a World Cup and Euro 2008," he stated. "They know now how it is to win and will have a small advantage because of that." Earlier in the tournament, Buffon cast doubt over Italy's chances of vicotry, but the 34-year-old thinks that his side have improved with each game. "I said that we would not win the Euros if we kept on playing like we did against Croatia, because we were not able to reflect our superiority in matches," he explained. "This has obviously changed, but we still have to wait for tomorrow to see if we are good enough to win the tournament." Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Tonight we met a team with an inestimable value. “We thank the fans with all our hearts, as they never abandoned us and it gave us pride to give them these emotions. At times you meet someone stronger and so credit to them. “The Nazionale belongs to everyone and is the only vehicle that reanimates and brings some joy back into the homes of fans.” Condividi questo messaggio Link di questo messaggio Condividi su altri siti

Jul 4, 2012 Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has made a trip to the Bosnian holy town of Medjugorje following Italy's second-place finish at Euro 2012. According to local authorities, Buffon landed in Mostar on a private jet on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after the Azzurri suffered a 4-0 defeat against Spain in Kiev. The 34-year-old then made his way to Medjugorje, which has been a site of religious pilgrimage since 1981 after reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local Catholics. Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini also made the trip to the religious site in March, when his side were trailing rivals Manchester United by two points in the Premier League. Buffon started in each of Italy's matches at Euro 2012, saving a spot-kick from Ashley Cole in the Azzurri's quarter-final penalty shoot-out victory. Jul 12, 2012 There is speculation that Juventus’ search for a successor to Alessandro Del Piero’s No 10 shirt may stop with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Interest this summer surrounds who will take famous shirt number at the club, after Del Piero’s departure this summer. Speculation has pushed Sebastian Giovinco to the shirt and also transfer target Stevan Jovetic, whilst President Andrea Agnelli yesterday admitted that it is a decision that carries significance. The giornalaccio rosa dello Sport believe that goalkeeper Buffon is a surprise contender for the shirt and that he would be prepared to drop his No 1 jersey to take it. This is understood to be an attempt from the ‘keeper to avoid internal disputes in the dressing room arising over the destination of the No 10 and so as to remove the burden that any replacement to Del Piero would otherwise face. This would not be Buffon’s first experience of a less-than-traditional number, as during his days at Parma he wore the No 88 and No 77 shirts. Jul 15, 2012 Gianluigi Buffon has been asked to take a pay cut by Juventus as talks over a contract extension reach an advanced stage, according to Tuttosport. The goalkeeper, 34, has made no secret of his intention to end his career with the Serie A champions, but negotiations regarding a new deal have dragged on for months. It is now reported, however, that an agreement is close to being struck and Buffon is set to sign a new contract until 2015, when he reaches 37. Tuttosport further claims that Buffon's new deal will be worth €4 million per year, which represents a €2m reduction from his current deal, as Juventus follow the example of other Italian clubs and try to reduce their wage bill. Buffon, who joined the Old Lady from Parma in 2001 for €54.2m, made 35 appearances for the side last season, conceding just 16 goals.
