Former Juventus director Luciano Moggi has dropped a bombshell, claiming Calciopoli never existed and that it was an invention to erode the level of success enjoyed by the club. The 2006 scandal rocked Italian football. Juventus had two Scudetti revoked and were sent to Serie B. Moggi received a lengthy ban from the game for his part. But, over three years on, Moggi has spoken publicly about the scandal, claiming it was all a big invention. "What is Calciopoli? Calciopoli is just errors made by referees. Errors that have always existed," he told Radio Kiss Kiss. "The truth is that Calciopoli never existed. It exists only in the minds of the people who wanted to bring this thing forwards. "The proof is in the trial that took place in Turin. Juventus were acquitted of any wrong doing - that says it all. The facts do not exist. "Calciopoli was born because the club did not defend us. Referees make mistakes." Moggi also used episodes from certain decisions by referees this season to further underline his point. "Up until now the presidents of clubs used to speak about having good faith, then De Laurentiis, Zamparini, the Bologna president Menarini and Jose Mourinho all complain and speak about Calciopoli," he continued. "Now that so many refs are making massive errors, everyone has started to complain."

Italian FA (FIGC) President Giancarlo Abete has razed suggestions that a new wave of Calciopoli could rip through Serie A. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis claimed he feared a "new Calciopoli" on the horizon after a number of refereeing decisions went against his side. Most recently the Azzurri were denied a clear penalty against Parma on Sunday. However, Abete has moved to cut a line of denial through De Laurentiis' comments. "I heard what De Laurentiis said. He was just upset, that's all," Abete told Il Corriere Dello Sport. "The Napoli president just expressed an opinion in relation to referees and his team, nothing more. "Everyone makes criticisms but we need to be careful not to exaggerate and speak about something which does not exist."

Although many think there were some racist undertones to the chants, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon doesn't agree and he came to the defence of the Bianconeri faithful.
