LONDON, England - After a slow start, one of the most recognizable athletes in the world took one step closer to the most coveted title in tennis, as Maria Sharapova beat Sabine Lisicki in the semifinals of Wimbledon, 64 63. Lisicki, a wildcard working her way back up the rankings after an ankle injury marred her 2010 season, was the Cinderella story of the tournament, picking off No.3 seed Li Na and No.9 seed Marion Bartoli on Centre Court en route to her first Grand Slam semifinal, Germany's first Grand Slam semifinal in 12 years. Against Sharapova she came out strong again, storming out to a 3-0 lead in the first set; but the No.5-seeded Russian wouldn't have any of it, toughing out the next few games to get back on serve and eventually tucking away the first set, 6-4. She burst out to her own 3-0 lead in the second set and stretched it to 5-1, giving up two games before closing it out on one last Lisicki forehand long. "Today wasn't my best match of The Championships so I was really happy to get through in two sets," Sharapova said. "Sabine started really well. The first three games she played really well and I did quite the opposite. She served a lot better, and I was giving her way too many free points on my serve. I told myself to take it one point at a time. I got in my zone and got back to 3-all. "I was fortunate to win that set then get up a couple of breaks in the second." In Paris, Sharapova made her first Grand Slam semifinal since a nine-month shoulder injury lay-off from August 2008 to May 2009, and now she has gone one better in London with a run to the final. She's 3-1 in Grand Slam finals in her career, winning Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008, falling in the 2007 Australian Open final (to Serena Williams). "It's a great feeling. It has been many years, and it's a great feeling. It's pretty amazing to be back on that stage," Sharapova said. "I was pretty realistic coming in. I hadn't been past the fourth round in a few years. So to be at this stage, I'm just thrilled to have the opportunity to go for it again here." Sharapova was asked about her memories of her 2004 run. ""I remember I was so thrilled to be in the final. I was down and out in the semis. I was ready to pack my bags and go home. It just happened to rain and I was able to change things around. It was my first Grand Slam semifinal. I just took it all in." Sharapova has now won 16 of her last 17 matches (the loss coming to Li Na in the French Open semifinals a few weeks ago). The Russian, still only 24 years old, will return to the Top 5 no matter what, and will rise to No.3 with the title. Sharapova beat Kvitova in their only previous meeting, last year. "I expect her to be a really tough opponent," Sharapova said. "Number one, she's a really good grass court player. She proved that last year by getting to the semifinals. She's also a lefty, which I've said before is very tricky on grass. She uses her serve really well. And she has been playing really good tennis."
