The mosaic was to have been formed by Liverpool fans each holding up a card in the Kop stand at Anfield and was to have been a reply gesture to fans travelling from Italy. A group Fiorentina fans - known as "The Violas" - requested a formal twinning with the Reds and had paraded a banner at the first leg in Florence. The banner proclaimed "Welcome to the Reds - Your story is, to us, a legend" and the Liverpool officials had perceived it as a tribute to the Reds. But after an appeal was launched for volunteers to take part in the card mosaic event at Anfield it was pointed-out that the gesture from the Florentine fans was anything but friendly. Rather than a note of sympathy over to the 96 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster it was a sick joke to score points against arch rivals Juventus over the deaths of 39 fans in the Heysel Stadium tragedy in Belgium 24 years ago. Liverpool scrapped the planned mosaic today and bowed to pressure from angry Reds and Juve supporters who pointed to the thinly veiled insult contained in the original banner. Angry Juventus fan Giuseppe Sommarino, 46, said: "The banner displayed by the Fiorentina fans was entirely a display of sick and pathological hatred towards Juventus and not a genuine tribute to Liverpool. "Sadly, in Italy we know that there is no friendly spirit between Fiorentina fans and other clubs and they show only great disrespect, insults and hatred towards Juventus. "At the last game they played in Turin there were Fiorentina fans in the stands wearing T-shirts with with a huge number "39" on the front - the number who died at Heysel. "They even showed a banner asking why we were 39 spectators short. "Our hearts still bleed for the Juventus fans who died in Brussels, but some of the mindless beasts from Florence cannot understand that football is a game and that human life and dignity is much more important after all. "I'm glad that Liverpool realised that it was not a friendly gesture and that they have not gone ahead with this mosaic. "Liverpool would have made a big mistake of they had paid any kind of tribute or vote of thanks to those beasts." Liverpool Football Club did not respond to an invitation to comment on the matter. But one Liverpool fan, George Williams, 43, said: "It seems that some of the officials at the club took this offer of 'twinning" at face value. "An appeal for volunteers to take part in a reply mosaic went up on the official Liverpool web site. "Pretty soon a lot of supporters had messages the web site to explain the mistake and they quietly forgot about the idea.
